Laylee’s Kin was a very moving documentary on how the oppression of the African American culture has been generationally effected by the cotton industry. It was apparent in Layee’s family how illiteracy, incarceration, and discrimination caused a cycle of poverty in the families of Tallahatchie County. The film introduced a few individuals that really stood out in their film for their resiliency. Granny, Laylee’s Granddaughter, really stood out to me in the film dealing with the incarceration of her father Reggie. Reggie Barns, the superintendent of the school who was battling a probation due to poor testing scores.

The article “The Life of Carlos, an Undocumented New Yorker” exposes the dehumanizing atmosphere Honduras reveals to the population at a young age, causing many teenagers such as Carlos to be in search of a new life in the United States while losing their innocence along the journey to survive. Carlos makes it to the United States, but quickly is thrown to an adult detention center, but temporarily released to be with his U.S. citizen Grandmother. However, the identity of immigrant groups has been fundamentally challenged and shaped as they attempt to integrate into U.S. society. The influx of Mexicans into the United States has become a controversial political issue that necessitates a comprehensive understanding of their cultural themes and sense of identity. The film Mi Familia (or My Family) covers the journey and experiences of one Mexican-American (or “Chicano”) family from Mexico as they start a new life in the United States. Through the essay he contrasts the warmth of the barrio and the coldness and rigidness of the cities. In the barrio, the fences are simply “fences and not walls… no sense of intrusion when cross them” (Ramirez 2). Furthermore, “the color-splashed homes arrest your eyes … [they’re not] revolting rows of similar houses” (Ramirez 2). The colors used to paint the homes of barrios represent the happiness and homey feeling that embrace the neighborhood.
In November of 1990, Nancy Yanes’s life changed when she was finally immigrating to America. Nancy, an immigrant from Sayopango, El Salvador, arrived to the US only knowing a few of her family members, with no understanding of the language, and didn’t have any money to support herself on her own. Nancy left behind a life of poverty and crime-ridden neighborhoods to reunite with her parents and younger brother. Nancy Yanes’ mother, Rosina Guerrero had to leave her children behind and come to America illegally. It took her 8-9 years to be able to get the legal document to bring her two children; Nancy and her sister, into the U.S. Rosina believed “a small sacrifice now would mean a huge benefit later.”

Anzaldúa was born to parents Urbano and Amalia Anzaldúa and was the eldest of four children, all born in Raymondville, Texas. Anzaldúa spent her childhood living in ranches and even traveled to West Texas to become a migrant worker. My response essay will come from the essay who a girl was involved called Sandra Cisneros, the daughter of a Mexico-American mother and a Mexico father. A daughter whose father didn’t believe in whatever she did. No matter how Sandra tried her best to impress her father, Sandra’s father didn’t believe her because of the tradition that lasted for years that, girls can’t do stuff that will catch an eye from the society. Anna was not allowed to play with her brothers in public, and also, not only she wasn’t allowed to go to school, but also, she wasn’t allowed to expand her talent of drawing.
In the film documentary “A Place at the Table” it is reminding to us that there is food insecurity in the United States and it is not being looked upon in the right dictation. It does not just talk about having a hard time with food insecurity, but also not being able to get food with enough nutrition. In the film Barbie who told her story in the film said that “Hunger: it’s right here in the United States. It could be right next door and you would never know because people are too afraid to talk about it.”
The events all around us influence the way we think and the way we act, whether we realize it or not. Events that happen during our lifetime affect us in ways we may not even be able to comprehend at the time. In the 1970s and even today the issue of minorities not being treated the same as the majority in America is a prevalent topic that is being talked about more and more. In recent times racial segregation is a major issue all around us, but it is mostly depicted in the news. Ernesto Quiñonez observed racial discrimination all throughout his lifetime, whether it was through people around him or even people he looked up to.
At some point of your life you meet very special people that carry very similar interests. This creates bonds that can be a very powerful and important part of your life. Some may say that bonds are created between a series of negative events that leads up to friendship. However, this is not true because in The Way, the main characters come together to walk the same path. Each character motivates each other to achieve the overall reason of why they wanted to walk The Camino De Santiago.
Art provides a place to challenge these biased stereotypes about Mexican-Americans and bring awareness to the broken immigration laws and the enforcement system, while also encouraging its audience
Though they are friends, the lives of Pedro Machuca and Gonzalo Infante differ drastically in many aspects including family life, the luxuries they can afford, and the political affiliations chosen by their families. All of which relate to the common everyday life of Chilean citizens during the Allende Presidency, and the Pinochet Dictatorship implemented after the coup d'etat. During this time, the civil unrest never ceased, and life for chileans was generally either good or bad based on social status, income, and party affiliation. Both Machuca and Infante are classic examples of the division inequality of life amongst Chileans, with Machuca being a poor boy who lived in a shanty town, having very little education, and owning very few possessions. Where as Infante is wealthy, has a high end private education, and can afford to buy various luxury items such as brand name shoes and food for his family.
Individuality is unaccepted and isolated from our society that embraces conformed values. The Copy Shop and L’homme sans tete are examples of short films that reflect this ironic problem of society where individuals are not identified with their individual morals, but conformed morals enforced by society. The 2001 short film, Copy Shop by Virgil Widrich conveys the idea of conformity. This is done foremost through the metaphor of 'copies' that fill up the film's world that represent conformity, where the composer satirises our society which is filled up by 'copies' of individuals sharing conformed ideals.
In the film Extreme Measures someone can find ideas of Secular Ethics throughout the film involving Utilitarianism and its basic tenets along with Kantian analysis. The basic tenets of Utilitarianism include the principle of utility, Hedonism, and the viewpoint of a disinterested and benevolent spectator. While the tenets of Kantian Ethics, which include good will, the formula of universal law, the formula of the end itself, and the categorical imperative. These basic ideas setup arguments for and against the Utilitarian ideas set up by doctor Myrick. In the film doctor Myrick makes the claim that it is worth the deaths of unwilling subjects in order to help/save the lives of millions.
