Did you know that more than half the refugees around the globe are under the age of 18, even though children make up 31 percent of the world's population? The main character of Inside Out and Back Again, Ha, is one of those children. She and her family had to flee from her home because of the Vietnam War. This essay will be about how bad the refugee experience is and how it turned refugees life inside out, but also about how they turned their life back around for the better. 31) This quote has a depressing tone. With Father being gone, it puts strain on the entire family, especially Mother. The phrase that give the the feeling of the tone depressing are ‘permanent frown of worries.’ Another quote I have is, “The truth probably is that he (her father) tried to escape because he was beaten so many times.” (Amela) This quote has a tone of despair in it. The father had to strain to survive and get back to his family, however he didn’t make it out alive. The family knew he was dead. Even though they didn’t know how, they still knew he was gone and would never come back, which caused strain on the entire rest of the family. To begin with, my first quote is, “Not the same but not bad at all.” (pg. 344) In this quote the author creates an uplifting tone. Ha is finally learning accepting the things she cannot change now that she can never go back to her old home. She is relieved that at least now she can finally enjoy what she wants to. The phrase that gives the feeling of positivity are ‘but not bad,’ showing her acceptance. Secondly, my next piece of evidence is, “But America is giving us a chance for a better future than we could have in Bosnia.” (Amela) This quote has the tone striving. They are saying that their life will will change for the better by living in America. They are relieved that they can have a second chance at life and that it doesn’t have to include war. The words that give the feeling of striving are ‘chance and better future.’ And lastly, my final quote is, “If you feel like crying, think at least now we know. At least we no longer live in waiting.” (pg. 371) The quote has a more loving kind of tone. The family loves their father, and want him to be happy, even in the afterlife. Now that they know that he is no longer in this world, they can expect him to feel relieved to no longer need to wait for them. The
