Imagine waking up one day and having to leave everything and everyone you love behind and start a new life. This is what refugees all around the world are forced to do almost daily. Along the way, they endure many difficulties and some aren't able to survive. When this happens, many refugees, including Ha, a character from the novel Inside Out and Back Again, start to feel inside out and face difficulties, including discrimination; eventually they are able to come back again with the help of friends and people who support them.
To begin, when becoming a refugee, many people feel inside out because they are faced with many problems, one of which is discrimination. "We suffered in our country Bhutan because we didn't speak the language or practice …show more content…

This support comes from a variety of places, including companies that specialize in making refugees feel comfortable in their new country. "Please continue to extend your support so that you can continue bringing happiness to more families like mine" (Gurung). In this speech, Til Gurung expresses the gratitude he feels towards Refugee Transitions and how much his life has been influenced in a positive way because of the help he was shown. In addition to knowing that there are specialized companies willing to help you, making new friends to support and help you through your transition can also make a refugee's adjustment into their new life more enjoyable. "I will write in my journal October 14 is most relieved day..." (Lai 185). For her first few months in America, Ha had a very hard time adjusting and making friends, so when she was finally able to make two in one day, it was the highlight of her year. Another person who brightened her day was her tutor Mrs. Washington. "She tells me to take the book home" (Lai 202). This may seem like an insignificant detail to pick out, but this little deed helped to slightly restore a Vietnam shaped hole in Ha's heart. This book that Mrs. Washington gave to Ha was filled with pictures of her beloved country. Although a small deed, it helped Ha accept the fact that she had left Vietnam and would not be returning anytime soon, if at all, as well as allowing her to have a piece of her old home in her new one.
