The reason racism still exists is because people continue to believe that some races are better than other races: Dred Scott vs Sanford, Plessy vs Ferguson, Shelly vs Kraemer. In the Dred Scott vs Sanford case, Dred Scott and his wife sued for their freedom from slavery. They fought in an 11 year legal struggle just to be free, but lost that battle. As the case was on its way to Supreme Court it grew in significance.
It is no secret that racism still exists today, it is not a thing of the past. This is not by chance but rather careful laid out by the institutions we have today. This has ultimately had two different effects on africans and whites Americans. The permeation of racial biases into the law enforcement machinery of the United States of America has had adverse effects on the interactions between the police and racial minorities, leading to the unfair – and often, unconstitutional – treatment of African-Americans by policemen. Slavery is over therefore how can racism still exist? This has been a question posed countlessly in discussions about race. What has proven most difficult is adequately demonstrating how racism continues to thrive and how forms of oppression have manifested. Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow, argues that slavery has not vanished; it instead has taken new forms that allowed it to flourish in modern society. I believe that I am white. Growing up in wealthy suburban town in Massachusetts, surrounded by people that look like me, I never was required to think about my safety, dignity, future, or body through the lens of my race. I learned about slavery, racism, and the Civil Rights era in a classroom with 20 other kids and a teacher who also believed they were white. We learned about these issues as apathetic bystanders. Memorize them; get a good grade on the test.
