PLANNING Lesson summary and focus: Students will demonstrate and build on their current knowledge on how they will use colons to separate items in a series or a sentence. Classroom and student factors: There are 3 students who are EIP, 3 students who are SPED & ESOL, 4 students who are SPED only, 6 students who are ESOL only, and 1 student who is in the Gifted program. a. Use punctuation to separate items in a series. Specific learning target(s) / objectives: When completing a Ticket Out the Door worksheet, students will be able to demonstrate understanding of colon usage or placement in sentences. Teaching notes: This lesson is at the beginning of a three-lesson unit at the 5th grade level building on background knowledge of colons and semicolons. Preview: Students will be brought to the floor to preview a drawing of a colon. Students will be asked open-ended questions to determine what they already know. I will read the rules for using colons from white paper which is placed on the board. Opening: Vocabulary words will be reviewed as a group while students are still sitting as a group in the floor. Students will watch a BrainPop movie to further their knowledge of colons. Learning and teaching activities: Group board work will be explored while using Elmo and the Smartboard.
