When deciding which the type of instructional strategies necessary to facilitate a workshop series to aid the teaching staff of Timberlane Middle School in Pennington, NJ in implementing G Suite for Education into their lessons, I thought back to my own experiences of informally training members of my collaborative and PLC teams on the same topic. My peers knew they needed to learn the software, and had specific things they wanted me to model and then assist them in the implementation. For this reason, the main instructional strategy I will utilize in my instruction will be the Instructivist strategy and I will incorporate Keller’s ARCs to increase the learner’s intrinsic motivation. Each is an independent entity and the staff members can choose to attend any and/or all of the workshops based on their respective needs. Keeping with Keller’s ARCs, each workshop will begin with a bell ringer (warm-up) activity utilizing the application on which the workshop is designed to teach, in order to stimulate the learner’s attention. According to Kepper’s ARCs, this activity would be a classified as inquiry arousal which “stimulates curiosity by posing challenging questions or problems to be solved.” (Learing-theories.com) From that point, I will link the learner’s responses and experiences from the bell ringer activity to help them make a relevant connection between the respective application and their pedagogical practices. The strategies from Keller's ARCs I will incorporate to make this connection will include “telling the learners how the new learning will use their existing skills”, explaining how the subject covered in the workshop can improve their professional practice today and in the future, and explaining how the bell ringer activity they completed can serve as a model for their own implementation at the culmination of the workshop. …show more content…
This type of instruction qualifies as instructivist because Instructivists feel that “First, the purpose of instruction is to help the learner understand and interact with the world”. (www.csus.edu) In these workshops, the instruction will help the learners interact with the digital world of which their students are native. Furthermore, Instructivists believe the “learner should be directed by instructors, who make the decisions about the content and sequence of the learning.”(www.csus.edu) In this workshop series, I will be planning out the workshop’s content as well as conducting the workshop utilizing direct instruction. Additionally, the modeling of tasks during instruction would also qualify as showing relevance under Keller’s
