Intasc Model Core Teacher Standards

Standards 1 and 2 of the InTASC Model Core Teacher Standards address the Learner Development and Learning Differences. Standard 1 states: “The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.” Standard 2 states: “The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards.” As I read Standards 1 and 2, I consider these as a challenge for every teacher to educate each of their students on an individual level. In Special Education we have a process that helps ensure that all students receive the high expectations and support from their teachers. This means that we can no longer teach to all students and expect them to be successful in their learning environment. We must take into consideration our student’s individual educational program, and adapt our teaching procedures to each of our students. Although, I had written IEP’s for my students before this class, this assignment truly gave me the practice needed to ensure I understood the importance of each section of the IEP. This assignment impacted my professional practice by increasing my knowledge and skill level of the development of an Individualized Education Program for my students. I now have increased my knowledge in each part of the IEP to give my students the best possible educational program to help them succeed in their learning
