Martin Luther King Jr. was an influential civil rights leader. He wanted to bring all people together and live in a peaceful society. In his speech, King talked about how as a leader of a civil rights movement, he couldn't support the war in Vietnam. This paper analyzes claims made by Ms. Haley Honeck by selecting pins that represent her sense of logos and ethos on a Pinterest board. Pinterest is a social media platform considered by some as a virtual corkboard similar to those used by crafts people to depict things of interest and importance to them comprised of boards a collection of pins, and pins individual pictures or quotes. Ms. Honeck is currently a Criminal Justice student at University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and a Colorado native. With her Pinterest board, Haley's purpose is to make claims about her ethos based on her 115 pins reflecting her values as family, travel, friends, boyfriend, figure skating, Colorado, shopping, police, hair and nails, Gray's Anatomy, and wine.

Lawrence Lessig, a professor at Harvard Law School, explained through his TEDx talk at TEDxMidAtlantic that democracy in America no longer represents the American people. He effectively used ethos, pathos, and logos throughout his twenty minute talk to convey the solutions as to solving the issues that need to be addressed, such as climate change, social security, and student debt. However, in order to address the former issues, inequality needs to be addressed and resolved first and foremost. David Foster Wallace uses a combination of rhetorical literary devices and modes of persuasion to convince his audience, Kenyon College’s graduating class, that in their adult life it is not only important, but necessary to look past themselves and view the world without themselves at the center. If they do not do so, it will cause them daily misery and pain when having to interact with people when they are tired or bored. Wallace is able to persuade his audience by first gaining credibility with them, so they are more willing to listen to what he has to say. Then, he uses logical reasons as to why they should not put themselves above others in their lives, and solidifies the lesson through emotional appeals that most of the class can relate to and use to grow from. Martha Nussbaum has experiences in writing about education related topics such as liberal education, already publishing a book called „Cultivating Humanity”. However her inspiration to write her book entitled “Not for Profit: Why Democracy Needs the Humanities” came from a person of the Spencer Foundation named Mike McPherson but also because of the fact that she was resident fellow at the foundation. In addition to this, her association with the Cambridge school in Weston, Massachusetts helped her by giving her optimism in what type of education she wanted to defend in her book. ( xii )
If it weren’t for Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence, America would look so much different than it is right now. Who knows if the United States would even exist. Arguably, if Jefferson hadn’t written the Declaration, is someone else had, it wouldn’t have been as strong. And possibly, the new colony would have needed to wait longer to become independent, if they became independent at all. But Jefferson’s strong rhetorical appeals help persuade his audience that new colony deserves independent, and his use of allusions contribute greatly to his argument, making his appeals powerful and capture the attention of his audience, and to get them to agree with him.
Near the beginning of his renowned essay, "Civil Disobedience," Henry David Thoreau appeals to his fellow citizens when he says, "...I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government. " This request serves as a starting point from which the rest of "Civil Disobedience" emerges. Thoreau 's essay is particularly compelling because of its incorporation of rhetorical strategies, including the use of logos, ethos, pathos, purposive discourse, rhetorical competence and identification. I will demonstrate how each of these rhetorical techniques benefit Thoreau 's persuasive argument. Thoreau uses logos throughout his essay to strengthen his argument with reasoning.
In Outliers: the story of success, Malcolm Gladwell tries to prove why successful people are successful. Particularly in chapter eight; Gladwell claims that rice farmers are hard workers, that hard workers are not successful, and that Asians are better than Westerners in math. Gladwell uses many techniques to persuade the audience to his point of view, which he does beautifully. Gladwell uses these different techniques to prove his claims in a variety of ways. All of his techniques can be categorized as Ethos, Pathos or Logos.
The Civil Rights Movement was a big thing for the United states and we as Americans will always remember Martin Luther King Jr. for helping lead the people and inspire change and bring hope. The speech “ I Have a Dream” by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an important gathering of people at the Lincoln Memorial. A huge crowd gathered to listen to his powerful speech which helped to inspire change. Martin Luther King also wrote a letter to eight white clergymen named “Letter From Birmingham Jail” the letter was written in in his jail cell which he was in for marching and protests. In both of these texts Dr. King used pathos and logos to inspire change and reach out to the people during the civil rights movements.
King has provided his opinion about education is building character. Dr. King uses his words to create an audience awareness to think for yourself isn’t the same as you may call it critical thinking. Against the common assumption that colleges should teach their students “critical reasoning,” Dr. King argues that critical thinking alone is insufficient and even dangerous. Teaching one to think critically is no small task. Most students learn by constructing knowledge based on an engaged learning process rather than by absorbing knowledge from passive sources.
