Intelligence is “the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills.” A major theme that is used in the novel Frankenstein,by Mary Shelley, is that intelligence is a blessing and a curse. Throughout the novel there are many situations where this theme can easily be proven. In the world we live in today, we can also show how knowledge can be a blessing and a curse.(D,I) To start off, there are many good examples of how the creature encounters the idea that knowledge is a blessing. The creature wants to become more human like so he learns how to read and speak, “My days were spent in close attention, that I might more speedily master the language,” (Shelley 110). One example is the advancements in medicine.(I) We have been able to learn so much more about how the body works. The doctors and scientists agree that, “The speed of science is often excruciatingly slow. But over the last decade we've made significant strides in medical research, disease treatment and the improvement of patient's' quality of life,” (CNN Health). Since the medical field has grown it is allowed to do research on more difficult diseases. An example of an incurable disease being researched is Alzheimer's. The study is trying to figure out how to diagnose people earlier and then treat them to see if they can help. Knowing this is happening shows us that the more knowledge we have the better we can make our lives which is truly a blessing. Another benefit of knowledge is the new technology being created. A new feature that has been put into many cars today is that the driver and passenger have to be buckled for the sound to stop. This new technology it can save many lives and protect people. We were able to put this type of technology in the car, because we have enough knowledge to create this.
