1. Jonas’ community is built upon trust and the reliance on each other. Their interdependence, the trust and reliance they put in one another, is how their society is run. Lying is a major crime in their community and everyone must explain and apologize for any sort of wrong doing. At an early age each of the children are given coats that fasten in the back, so that they may learn to have interdependence. They also are taught interdependence with their jobs. Due to everyone being assigned a job they must trust those people to do their job without disagreement, for if anyone didn’t do their job they wouldn’t have anyone to replace them. 2. In the Giver there are many things missing in the peoples lives, things we would say make a human human. The people in Jonas’ community are emotionless; they are never angry, sad, in pain, or in love. Jonas’ community is afraid of pain therefore they took away all emotion and deprived the people of their own being. The people in Jonas’ community are also missing color. Everything is gray; there are no pretty pink flowers, there is no sparkling water, or anything beautiful in their lives. When Jonas became the new Receiver, he was given rules that were very different and abrupt compared to everyone else who received their assignment. Jonas has to go straight to see the Giver after school and go straight home after without socializing like everyone else. He cannot talk about what he is doing as the Receiver and what he does to train unlike everyone else. Jonas is also allowed to break the rules and lie and ask questions even if they’re rude and he is promised an answer. Jonas is not allowed to talk about his dreams or take any medications other than ones for illness or injury. The final rule he is told is that he is not allowed to apply for Release which is something everyone in the community is allowed to apply
