Innovation at International Foods Group
International Foods Group (IFG) has embarked upon a mission to implement innovation within the organization to increase their target marketing demographic and integrate more technological advancements within their internet marketing program and the organization as a whole. Included in this mission is the implementation of a technology roadmap to guide the organization in its development of internet marketing techniques.
In addition to integrating technology advancements for the marketing program, IFG must embrace technology experimentation throughout the firm. To realize these goals and vision requires updated technology. Upon review of the current technologies available within the organization, new technology requirements must be identified. Business needs must be anticipated to ensure new technologies are in place when needed to ensure IT stays ahead of business needs eliminating the need to react to business changes and growth which will prevent the organization from reaching its goals (Emerging Industries Section Department of Industry, Science and Resources, 2013). Current procedures within IFG require written business cases to be presented on an annual basis at the start of each fiscal year. Such procedures stymie the ability to be innovative as innovation is about testing the unknown. IFG must address these procedures and adapt them to allow for innovation experimentation. Aligning the technology with the business is equally challenging within IFG. A technology roadmap must be flexible and able to change with the business (McKeen & Smith, 2012). Technology procedures within the organization do not provide the required flexibility to change the TRM as the business changes. Procedures must therefore be reviewed and adapted to provide needed flexibility. Organizational support of the roadmap and new technology experimentation is not currently supported by key IT staff within IFG. IT budgets are submitted and approved at the beginning of each fiscal year, and strict procedures have been implemented for all new technology which must be requested, explained and approved.
