Everyday minorities get out of their beds to face prejudice based on their skin color, getting separated from their families at the border, or being labeled a “terrorist” and facing religious discrimination. Minorities today use their actions and voices to bring attention to the issues that are affecting their community. Samira Ahmed’s novel, “Internment”, talks about how Muslims are being put in camps for their religious beliefs and getting their rights taken away. Samira Ahmed is a British Muslim who wrote the novel to represent the history of violence and oppression that Muslims have been facing for years. In the novel Internment, Layla and her family get put in an internment camp and Layla ends up organizing resistance against the camp's authorities, and taking risks to fight for Muslims freedoms. In the novel, Layla was filled with courage and determination to put an end to the internment camps and to bring justice to Muslims. Layla’s small acts of rebellion influenced those around her and other individuals outside the camp to start taking action to protest for their freedom and the freedom of others. In Interment, Samira Ahmed explains that “We are Americans!” This time shouts from the Occupy protests join ours. “We demand to be released! We demand our freedom!” People shout and bang their pots and raise their fists in the air.” (Ahmed 247). Layla’s resistance against the oppression has brought the community in the camp together and everyone was there to express their solidarity and to support one another. Layla taking a stand against the injustice and oppression in the camp has made an impact on Muslims and was able to free those who were imprisoned in the camps.
