Sharday, her mother, aunt, and the grandmother’s girlfriend went to the reporter’s house the day before MLK day. An incident occurred about a picture that was posted on Facebook. Each person listed had some kind of weapon, and they all stabbed the reporter, while the child was presence. Law Enforcement and the Sheriff Department were called to the home, and the reporter drove himself to the hospital. The reporter notes they took the child back with them.
1. How did English settlement of colonial America impact on the making of an American nation, society and culture? According to history, the English culture ruled our society and a lot of the things that we practice came from them. For example, the English language, religion, Christianity, and Catholicism.
La Raza Unida and Brown Berets Unions have been, and continue to be, an important force for democracy, not just in the workplace, but also in the community – locally, nationally, and globally. Unions make democracy work better. Political, labor, and racial unions have been instrumental in the lives of many people in the United Sates, and even more important, they have led to important advances in the American histoy. For many years, the Chicano people were considered minority, the situation was to change in the mid and late 1960s, as many movements developed in response to the oppression of the Chicano community. In order to effect social change, Chicanos saw the need to enter into politics and galvanize the Mexican American community.
After just finishing chapter two, I can honestly say that the farmworkers movement and the importance of worker’s rights makes a lot more sense and I understand more of the Mexican American (and Filipino) struggles. Due to César Chávez and many others just as passionate about the movement, minorities saw their fight as hope that anyone can stand up to injustices. From reading chapter 2, I can accrue more information about César Chávez and Dolores Huerta and their impacts on the movement, as well as a deeper understanding of the importance this movement is to the Mexican and Mexican American people. In the 1910s and 1920s, the Philadelphia Waterfront was the home of one of the most enduring, multiethnic unions in the United States at the time. Most unions during this period segregated and rejected blacks; the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) wanted racial equality. In particular, Local 8 had a majority of African Americans, Eastern Europeans, and Irish Americans. Local 8 was an interracial, multiethnic labor union. When the United States entered the war, the longshoremen in Philadelphia helped to serve the nation, yet they used the war as an opportunity to improve their wages.
White privilege is defined as “…………..” After reading this and comparing it to my life and experiences I can recognize the resemblance. As a white person in my society, I hold copious privileges and forms of power that I have not earned, but has been handed. Although, I cannot speak for my entire race when I state this, I believe that any Caucasian person living in Canada, who would be willing to take the time to stop and think about their lives, would realize that they hold power over other racial minorities. This power is acquired solely due to the fact that they have a different colour of skin.
A boycott on grape growers that exploited Mexican-American workers began very innocently, but quickly spread across the country. Farm owners’ work requirements were disproportional in compare to the offered wages. Moreover, the exploitation was possible due to scarcity of alternative work for Mexican-American farm workers. The consequences of the exploitation impacted in a negative way on the farm workers entire families. The employees, due to the lack of alternative, worked under conditions which offended humanity.
White Privilege: Essay 1 White privilege is a systemic issue that has roots in our history as far back as the creators of our country. Searching back, we see our norms and values created into habits that have been woven into how we view and act around specific groups such as African Americans. 1.The theory/concept of intersectionality is a theory centered around oppression, domination and discrimination through various mediums from the social and cultural elements of society. The theory can be applied in many ways toward women as well as their involvement in the criminal justice system. Some forms of discrimination that is more prevalent in perceiving the individual is using a woman's status, race, sexual orientation, ability and age, however there can be more added to this list. This is a perfect example of institutional racism where youth come from low- income families are place in environments to set to fail. On the other hand, youth that come from affluent families are given opportunities and resources where they are set to be successful in their education. In the graph given it shows that in 2013 in LAUSD only 77percent of seniors graduated; nevertheless, at SMMUSD 93.5 of their seniors graduated. the core problem with current school policies is that they are not applied equally nor they are set up to motivate youth of color to engage
The Chicano Movement emerged as a response to the systemic racism and oppression by white America against latino and Mexican Americans during the twentieth century. However, to understand the movement, one must analyze the gross inequities and mistreatment that Latino Americans faced during this time in America--some of which still resonate today. These issues include a lack of rights, protections, and appreciation for migrant farm workers; segregation and discrimination in education; and the unfair treatment they faced in general in American society (Muñoz). The preponderance of such systemic oppression leads to the notion that the essence of the movement was rooted in the conflict theory. Through the conflict theory, the ideological roots of the movement can be understood.
Intersectionality is when there is other problematic society that affects a certain group of people within society is interconnected. The minority may all belong to the same group but yet there are many categories within that group that also deal with more than one form of oppression. In the article, the author makes valid points of the daily struggles of being a woman in society but also shines light on the issue that she also faces other forms of oppression because of her skin color. To the average white woman, the only form of institutionalized oppression they experience is solely gender based and therefore they tend to dismiss the idea that other races and religious fight for equality is much more intense.
