I had the opportunity to meet with Joseph Castriano, who is a tax partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers. During our meeting, we had the chance to discuss different careers in accounting and his path, I learned about PwC and public accounting from an inside prospective, and I received advice for future paths. With the help of Mr. Castriano and his experience, I was able to acquire and sort through the similarities and differences of auditing and tax accounting, and ultimately picture leaning more towards tax accounting position. Mr. Castriano graduated from DePaul University with a Bachelors and Master’s degree in Accountancy. Castriano’s career, knowledge in accounting has benefited him. After receiving his accounting degree, he was able to receive an accounting position at PwC out of college, and a major benefit of working for a public accounting firm, is the ability to move around to different teams, clients, and try out different jobs, which helps discover strengths and weaknesses, building relationships, and finding a niche within the accounting world. Accounting teaches team work and stresses attention to detail. In Mr. Castriano’s current position, knowing how to work as a team is important because his employees produce the work presented to clients, as well as attention to detail is critical because reputation and fees are on the line. In addition, accounting benefits his current job because it teaches a certain way of thinking about problems and refines business skills because accountants have the chance to see how operations within departments affect a business and how each department is run especially because PricewaterhouseCoopers is not only an accounting business, but they are also try to guide and provide advice to the client with business operations. Castriano, I learned that tax accounting is fast pace, involves working with an array of different clients in different fields, constantly being challenged and learning, whether it is studying new tax laws, new technology, business operations, and different types of business. There are also many travel opportunities in the field. PwC has offices in New York, Texas, Switzerland, and Dublin to name a few and Mr. Castriano travels all over the United States, but mostly on the East Coast.
