In the case of Tara Brown’s murder, various groups of individuals are affected. As well as maintaining principles of fair punishment and deterrence, the criminal justice system has to consider perceptions of the victim’s family (secondary victim), the community’s demand for crime prevention, and the offender’s rights to a fair court hearing. The most likely outcome is imprisonment for Lionel John Patea due to committing an indictable offence. It is important to note that if this was only a case of domestic abuse without murder, it would utilise more time, effort and expenses to come to a resolution. This is due to the different circumstances and degree of abuse that the judge has to assess.
This article addresses the Baltimore Ravens’ former running back Ray Rice and the ban that was placed on him as the result of a domestic violence incident he committed upon his then fiancé. At the time of the incident, the two were in a hotel elevator in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Video surveillance showed Rice punching his wife twice, knocking her out on the second punch. The commissioner of the NFL, Roger Goodell, responded by fining Rice and issuing him a two-game suspension. He was not prosecuted and his felony charge of committing third-degree aggravated assault was to be removed from his record after one year.
Introduction The article “Is C.T.E. a Defense for Murder,” published in The New York Times, Amy Dillard, an associate professor at Baltimore School of Law, and Lisa A. Tucker, an associate professor at Dexter University’s Thomas R. Kline School of Law, give their views about Aaron Hernandez being convicted of murder. They believe that instead of sending him to prison he should have been sent to a therapeutic hospital to help with his brain disease. I chose this article because C.T.E. is a big issue right now with the NFL. This has been affecting many of the players and the sport itself.
- When abuse has been ongoing for a length of time , the victim can feel like she/he deserves the abuse, is in denial over the extent of the abuse, embarrassed about others finding out, fear being killed if they left and fear the impact on the children or losing the children. Many victims of domestic and family violence, believe nothing can be done for them- they see on the news how little action is done such as in the case of Benjamin Ard and the assault of two women. In this case Ard charged with domestic violence, but was released from jail on $1,000 cash bail. He went on to breach his bail and was then charged with domestic violence assault and violating the conditions of release from a prior charge; he was sentenced to only thirteen months
Ray Rice was a star running back for the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL when a video of him brutally attacking his then-fiancé, now-wife Janay Palmer, was released by TMZ. The Ravens organization and the NFL took a number of steps to address the situation to avoid a crisis situation. While the NFL handled this case better than other organizations have handled other crisis situations, there are some gray areas where the NFL could have done a much better job addressing the situation (Natta & Valkenburg, 2014). On February 15, 2014, Rice and Palmer were both arrested and charged on simple assault, however the details of the assault were unclear, but Rice’s attorney described it as a minor altercation.
Changes have to be made for the future, police that is handling cases such as intimate violence should have a prompt response. The restraining order wouldn’t do any good if it isn’t enforced, the perpetrator should be return to police custody to guarantee the safety of the victim. Compensation can be used as a tool to discourage offenders from committing acts. Families and victims should be compensated for the grief that they were put through and the losses they may have had (Fattah & Peters,

A lot of times when people hear and talk about domestic abuse, the lines are blurred around the term victim. Too many times people forget the true meaning of that word, especially concerning instances of domestic violence. There are many reasons why victims stay. Is there really a need to be married anymore? Does marriage actually benefit your relationship, or is it an outdated institution that we’ll be better off without? In this speech, I’ll convince you that marriage is a thing of the past, and that society’s views on marriage have changed enough in the past decade that marriage really isn’t necessary anymore. One of the main purposes of marriage is to maintain a permanent relationship, but nowadays marriage doesn’t lead to a permanent relationship due to the increase of divorce rates.

The behaviors that go on are to maintain total control over a spouse or an intimate partner. Relationship is a choice or in other words it’s a learned behavior. Most abusers believe that they can do what they want and get away with it.
