The book Canyons by Gary Paulsen is about the strange connection between Brennan, a present-time 14-year-old boy, and Coyote Runs, a 14-year-old Apache boy. He is very excited to go on his first raid and become a man. The story takes place in El Paso, Texas, which has a very hot climate and is nestled by many mountains, cliffs, and canyons. Brennan loves to run, but he says that he does it for himself. The track coach urges him to play but he won’t.

The narrator’s eyes are closed and he is being led by a blind man, yet he is able to see. Carver never explains what it is the narrator sees, but there is the sense that he has found a connection and is no longer detached or isolated. The narrator is faced with a stark realization and glimmer of hope. Hope for new views, new life and probably even new identity. Even the narrator’s wife is surprised by the fact that her husband and Robert really get along together.
Jackson plans on taking the audience's’ assumptions to her advantage toward the end of the story, which lures viewers to continue reading her story. Jackson also signifies the importance to these stones when she informs the readers the boys are protecting a pile of rocks. At first, readers would not notice the significance of these stones, but these stones will return into the reader’s thoughts when the climax arises. Jackson also adds the fact the girls are not participating in the boys’ activity, which could draw lines between men and women in the village.
