Literature: What is Literature?
What is literature? Literature is most forms or writing so long as they explore deeper meanings than simply to entertain an audience. This means whether it be short stories, poetry, a biographical piece, a drama or any other form of writing it can be viewed as literature. To demonstrate this we shall look at several forms of writing to see what makes them literature.
Short stories in literature are great tools for authors to deliver powerful messages without huge commitments from their audience. When looking at “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., we are shown a dystopian world where equality is what matters. “Wild” is a sorry about Cheryl Strayed’s self-discovery the story around “Do I love you this much?” (Strayed 13) is one of true love and great parenting as we are given an understanding of how she remembers her mother and how great that love was to her. This in turns provided a great commentary on how something so simple and small can help shape someone as well as the importance of telling someone you love them. In contrast “Into the Wild” shares with us the tragic tale of Christopher McCandless and his journeys across North America. In this story love is seemingly absent from Christopher’s heart shown here “I’m going to have to be real careful not to accept any gifts from them in the future because they will think they have bought my respect.” (Krakauer 21) The reader see his inner thoughts about his parents and are given a feeling of tension overshadowing any love that may have been there. “The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice” by William Shakespeare takes us to late sixteenth century, during the wars between Venice and Turkey. In this play, we follow the story of Othello and his wife Desdemona as they go from lovebirds to Othello murdering her due to him believing her to be unfaithful. Stealing himself for the task he states “Ay, let her rot and perish, and be damned tonight, for she shall not live. No, my heart is turned to stone; I strike it, and it hurts my hand. O, the world hath not a sweeter creature! She might lie by an emperor’s side and command him tasks.” (Shakespeare 4.1.170-73) With these lines the audience watches as fierce love turns into fierce hatred as Othello feels wounded by the one he loves most. The lines “I kissed thee ere I killed thee. No way but this, killing myself, to die upon a kiss.” (Shakespeare 5.2.369-70) Come as Othello learns that he had been misled only after he had already killed Desdemona as he take his own life in sorrow. This can bring thoughts to the viewer about how actions are permanent and hasty actions can cause even greater
