In the movie Into the Woods, the writer and director changed Rapunzel from being scared of the witch to being brave in the movie when the witch came to meet her in the castle she was trapped in. “You are not leaving this tower EVER!”. This quote from the Witch proves to the audience that she is a damsel because she is very helpless and has no way out of her misery. Not just that but it also shows she has a very evil stepmother who is torturing her and is the one who has made this mess in her life.
Modern authors used archetypes to change Rapunzel from the European fairytale tradition by talking about how she was gifted with such magical hair and how dreadfully she lived her life prisoned in a castle. For example, when the text describes Rapunzel it shows the audience that despite having long, gorgeous hair and being charming, she is a damsel in distress since she spends her days imprisoned in a castle. “Rapunzel had magnificent long hair, fine as spun gold”. Some people are quick to draw conclusions, but life is not always that simple. Rapunzel, for instance, spent many years imprisoned in the castle but never gave up. She got banished into a desert to find the prince and went back to her tower, the Witch saw them in the tower but, her powers stopped working and Rapunzel was able to run away from the evil witch. It just shows even in the worst of the worst situations you must remain courageous and calm. Rapunzel is a great example of the modern-day era because if the audience do not get something they want they lose their composure but she shows us that time will come you just need to have patience and be ready to face any challenge that comes your
