A deeper look into the world of Autism Many people believe they know what autism is and that they understand it, but do they really? The technical definition of autism is a mental condition present from childhood. While that is what autism is, there is also a variety of things with many different causes, symptoms and behaviors that also make up what autism is.
Autism is not just one big label, there are actually five different types of autism. They are: Classic autism, Asperger syndrome, Non-specific persuasive developmental disorder, rett syndrome, and childhood disintegrative disorder (”Autism”). “Asperger syndrome is a milder form of classic autism in the fact that “there is no delay in language or cognitive development (Di Napoli).” Non-specific persuasive development disorder is a group of children who dont quite fit in the criteria for the other types. Symptoms usually appear around ages 2-3. “In the first few months of life many of them do not interact and even avoid eye contact, they seem indifferent and distant to other people and often prefer to be alone (“Autism” ).” Common behaviors associated with autism are, disordered play, disordered speech, repetitive behaviors, and abnormal behaviors (“Autism”). Children with autism tend to develop certain basic skills later in life however sometimes they never develop them. Communicating with other people is a major thing children with autism have trouble with (“Autism”).” If a child has epileptic episodes that could be an effect of the autism.
