Investigation Sometimes it’s easy to notice whether or not a story is fictional or not, but, can elements of a story be both fictional AND real. Have you ever heard of Charles Dickens play “A Christmas Carol”? If you haven’t, it’s a story about a cold hearted man named Scrooge that loves money more than he loves and cares about other people, especially the poor. He then gets visited by three sprits that show him his Christmas past, present, and future (if he doesn’t change his ways). He learns to value and appreciate the people around him more than money. He learns that they don’t deserve what they are in and that they need to be helped. As you are reading or watching this play, you can tell that it’s a fictional story, but, can elements of a fictional story like his be both fictional and real? Let’s investigate. Let’s start our investigation by looking into the author of this timeless story and his time period. Charles Dickens lived in Victorian England (where he also sets A Christmas Carol) and at this time, 1/3 of the residences in London were living in poverty. The homeless were even forced into prison like workhouses. Dickens experienced all of this and wanted to show that the poor needed help and that they don’t deserve what they are in through his writing. In today’s world, people are facing problems like addiction, depression, AND poverty. Improvement is defiantly being made, but these problems still exist around the world. One example of someone who had catalyst like events that encouraged him to change is Robert Downey Jr. an actor, devoted husband, and father. He faced addiction and a drug problem. He made his transformation away from these problems after multiple arrests and even losing his part in major productions. Just like how the 3 spirits in” A Christmas Carol” helped Scrooge change; these events encouraged Robert Downey to change and become the man he is
