Tracking and investing in Ulta Beauty, Johnson & Johnson, and Kate Spade & Company, over the past 8 weeks has helped me learn more about the financial world, what goes on in it, and how to invest wisely. In the first part of this project, I researched each company and their historical performance over the years. Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) sells pharmaceutical and consumer goods, Ulta (ULTA) is a beauty retailer dealing with face, hair, and body products, and Kate Spade (KATE) sells handbags, clothes and accessories. In this part of the project, I theoretically invested $5000 in each stock, subtracting a $40 transaction fee in the beginning, and then spent the next eight weeks keeping close track of the closing prices. Investing in the Johnson & Johnson stock actually caused me to lose money. On November 18, 2016, I bought 39 shares for $115.36 each, for a total of $4499.04. At the end of the 8 weeks, on January 13, 2017, I sold those 39 shares for $114.60. This was 40 cents lower than the price I bought it for, causing me to lose $15.60 altogether. I really didn’t have much confidence in this company. It wasn’t too popular at the time at which I bought it, and I mainly only chose it because I liked some of their products that I own. I predicted that Kate Spade would come in last place, but I was totally wrong. Over the 8 weeks, I started seeing more commercials and ads for the company with my own eyes, and it started to become more popular. One November 18, 2016, I bought 280 shares of the stock for $16.39 each, which is a total of $4589.20. Slowly, the price of the stock grew, and since I could afford so many shares of it, the results I got were astounding. At closing time on January 13, 2017, I sold 280 shares for $18.10. Even though this was merely a two dollar difference, it made me a total profit of $506.80, thus making Kate Spade & Company (KATE) my number 1
