The novel, Invisible Man, takes places in the south and the story starts with the narrator speaking in his perspective. He tells us that he is an ‘invisible man.” Then the narrator goes in depth of what he means by being literally invisible to the world and how he takes advantage of being invisible. For example, he lives in a hole and steals electricity from a power company. The story continues when he is invited to deliver a speech in front of influential white people in the town. To earn his reward he is told is to box other back boys in the ring. After scrambling over electric rugs for fake gold coins, the narrator receives the briefcase and receives the scholarship. When the narrator returns to college, the narrator gets expelled from the school by Dr.Bledsoe. After being expelled he was forced to move to Harlem, New York. Eve with multiple recommendations, the narrator was struggling to find work in Harlem. The narrator later meets up with the last trustee Mr. Emerson and meets his son, Young Emerson. Using the Emerson name, the narrator lands himself a job at the paint factory. It wasn't soon after, an explosion occurred and caused the narrator to be knocked out. The narrator then is woken up with doctors surrounding him. When he faints during shock therapy a woman named, Mary Rambo takes the narrator in and shelters and cares for him. Mary Rambo acts like a motherly figure towards the narrator until he attracted the attention of Jim and is later joined into a group called Brotherhood only to give back to Mary. The narrator helps the Brotherhood attract more attention by giving out speeches. He meets the other members of Brotherhood like brother Hambro and Clifton and gains more popularity.
