In Ira Sher’s, “The Man in the Well”, a group of children find a man in a well and decide to not retrieve help to get him out. None of these children helped the man in the well because they felt they had the power over his life, and getting help would take that power away. Nine year old children do not experience power very often because of teachers or parents usually being in charge. Another explanation of why the children did nothing is because they viewed him as a monster. They never see his face or know his name which makes it easier to view him as inhuman. The man wants the children to help him as a stranger which is why he does not answer any of the children questions about his identity. While they do show signs of sympathy throughout
