In 2009 a movement started in Iran that would change the country forever. The movement is about hope for a democratic future in Iran. According to “Iran Primer: The Green Movement” by Abbas Milani, protest begin on the day after the June 12th, 2009 presidential election in Iran. The Iranian people had experienced enough once they felt something was suspicious about the election results. Iran is a nation that has long been known for harboring terrorists, corrupt leaders, zealots, and taking “diplomats hostage” (Milani). The Green Movement is very important to the people of Iran and one of the most dramatic changes to the government of Iran was the Iran Revolution, which began the Islamic Republic of Iran. This movement all begin over the 2009 Presidential election in Iran. Iranian citizens were outraged when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claimed victory over his opponent, Mir Hussein Moussavi in the 2009 election according to the article “What happened to the Green Movement in Iran?” by Hamid Dabishi. The citizens of Iran were shocked by the news that Ahmadinejad had won and they claimed that the election had been rigged. This outrage was because the population of Iran felt that he should have not won the election. Prior to the election, even up to the day before, “cited polls” had Mir Hussein Moussavi winning by a landslide victory according to the article, “Protests Flare in Tehran as Opposition Disputes Vote” By Robert F. Worth and Nazila Fathi. The elections results ended up being Ahmadinejad winning by a landslide victory. That night after the election Ahmadinejad called for the public to respect the results of the election. The day after the election more than a hundred thousand peaceful protesters came into the streets in Iran to protest the results of the election. Before the protest was over, the numbers of participants would reach the impressive amount of around 3 million protesters. The regime was shocked by the numbers and was not prepared to take on such a protest. The regime released forces to help control the crowd. The protesters were beaten, arrested and even killed by the regime (Malani). The slogan of these protest were all over signs of the protesters. Many signs said “where is my vote”
