2003 was the start of one of the most eminent wars known to Americans, the Iraq War. This seven year war is also known as the Second Persian Gulf War. The Multi-National Force, also known as the coalition forces, invaded Iraq in March of 2003. Thus, resulting in the third longest war in American history and more than 3,500 American deaths. The United States decided to attack Iraq mostly because of Saddam Hussein and their many terrorist organizations. President George W. Bush decided to invade Iraq to help with the War on Terror. Bush also saw connections with Al Qaeda leader, Osama Bin Laden, and Iraq which also led to a motive to invade them. Many people, however, had a strong opposition to the war. One political objective was to install a democratic government in Iraq. An economic objective is to make sure that we keep getting oil from them and other countries in the Middle East. And very importantly, a major military and homeland objective was to stop the spread of terrorism and keep terrorist organizations under control by limiting them as much as possible. The United States and all of their allies all wanted to remove Saddam Hussein from the leader of Iraq. The war went on for a very long time, so many things happened during the 8-year period. The U.S. started the war by bombing the capital of Iraq, Baghdad, in March of 2003. Then in April, Baghdad fell. The U.S. then went on a huge manhunt for Iraq’s leader, Saddam Hussein. They finally found him in a 7 foot deep hole where they captured him and put him on trial. He was found guilty and was sentenced to death.
