During my time in Marine Corp training, I have always wondered when I was going to go and do my part in the war in Iraq after the world trade center incident occurred. I finally got my chance to deploy to Iraq in the year of 2005-2006 with my reserve unit. As I conducted my civil affair missions in Iraq, the sights I saw were indescribable. At times I wonder, "How did this country that I heard great things about when I was young came to be that sight that it is now"? Through research, I have found some interesting facts about Iraq. At the end of this paper I hope to shed some light on the country of Iraq. The country of Iraq is a land of great historic references and biblical references. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, President Bush began calling for a “regime change” in Iraq, describing the nation as part of an “axis of evil.” The alleged existence of weapons of mass destruction, the thwarting of UN weapons inspectors, Iraq's alleged links to terrorism, and Saddam Hussein's despotism and human rights abuses were the major reasons cited for necessitating a preemptive strike against the country ("Iraq.”). The UN Security Council proposed more thorough military arms inspections on Iraq began on November 26. At the end of January 2003, the UN finished up the inspection report stating that Iraq did not come to acceptance of the inspections. President George Bush gave and ultimatum to Sadamm Hussein to leave the country or face war within 48 hours. The war began at March 19th at 0530 hours in Baghdad, which was named Operation Iraqi Freedom. Baghdad was completely secured by U.S. forces on April 9th which signaled the fall of Saddam Hussein dictatorship. While the war was declared over by May 1st, the country of Iraq fell into violence and chaos and the protest of U.S. forces escalated and was subddued by U.S and coalition forces. With Sadamm no longer in power, the transfer to an interim government took place on July 2004. On December 13th, Sadamm Hussein was captured by the U.S. military in a hole in the town of Tikrit and surrendered without a fight. Sadamm was hung for crime against humanity to include: the execution of 148 Shite men and boys from the town of Dujai and other crimes within his
