Courage of conscience, doing what is morally right without requesting recognition when there are obstacles to overcome, is exactly what Irena Sendler displayed during the Holocaust. Sendler explained why she felt morally obligated to find her voice and save children: “Every child saved with my help is the justification of my existence on the Earth, not a title of glory”(Sendler).(4) Confronting fear, she faced obstacles of the Holocaust which meant severe punishment or death, so courage of conscience was necessary. (1) Protesting openly about Jewish ghettos in Warsaw led to Sendler becoming suspended from college for three years. Sendler was forced to become organized because she was a social worker. She used this organization and documented names and dates of important people and things. Though no one could completely prepare for the devastation of the intense Holocaust, Sendler relied on her trust in God, careful planning, and knowledge of Jewish people to help her.
