Irony is a fickle thing. Some people can laugh at irony and its unusual and unexpected ways it can reveal itself. But to the author of the book Just Mercy, Bryan Stevenson, didn’t find irony to be funny whatsoever. This however did not stop him from ironically naming his book. One would think that a book with the word mercy in its title would be about just that.
The book The Hunger Games has many parallels to Julius Caesar. For example, the names: Cinna, Caesar, Flavius, Portia, Seneca, Brutus, and Cato are names present in both works. While the characters are not exactly alike, they hold many similarities. Portia is Brutus’ wife in Julius Caesar.

Throughout human history, evil or cruelty exist in various shapes and sizes; furthermore, it can be seen through Hitler's concentration camps and to the US Japanese internment camps. Various novels portray these situations, such as “Schindler's list” and “Farewell to Manzanar.” Some novels, however portray the evil and cruelty of human society such as the Lord of Flies, and it is a novel that detects the flaw of society to the defects of human nature. William Golding, the author of the Lord of the Flies, emphasise a person of innocence, turning into savagery due to evil within them. It emphasises that evil is a trait of humankind that cannot be destroyed.
Often in literature, comparing stories will lead to revelations about human nature. Lord of the Flies and The Hunger Games both share a motif of being trapped and take human nature to another level. Lord of the Flies and The Hunger Games prove that working together and looking out for each other will give you a greater shot at victory. One very significant similarity is that in both books the characters are trapped on an island and fighting for their safety and survival. In Lord of the Flies, school boys, Ralph, Roger, Simeon, Piggy, Jack and along with other kids are trapped on an island and have to fight for survival, but, after a while of being on the island the civilization starts to die and so do the boys from violence and lack of communication.
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee many characters are victims of the harsh conditions of Maycomb County. Often those who are seen to be metaphorical mockingbirds are punished the most. A mockingbird is one who only wants and attempts to do good. Characters such as Boo Radley, Jem Finch and Tom Robinson are exemplars of mockingbirds in Maycomb. In the novel it is explained by Atticus that killing a mockingbird is a sin because they do not do anything to harm to us like nesting in corncribs, or eating up the gardens, they only sing for us.
In the successful novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, the character, Mayella Ewell, is portrayed as a victim and villain. She is a complex character who can be viewed as a lonely victim of poverty and neglect. She is also a 19 year old adult who falsely accused a man of a crime he didn’t commit. A victim is a person who feels powerless, needs lots of attention, and is passive. A villain is one who is trying to accomplish a mission, acting on personal desires, and is hiding something.
No one can defeat Death There once was a young woman, who strived to be immortal, this caused her to bind herself away from the world for years. She decided one day that she had conquered death by changing her fate and goes to venture the town where she met a strange man, who insults her, filled with anger she decides to go after him where she faces death. A very similar situation is portrayed in “The Masque of the Red Death” with the character Prince Prospero, who believes that he has changed his fate by locking himself in his palace for years but this doesn’t end well for him as he faces death in his own home. In “The Masque of the Red Death”, written by Edgar Allen Poe, irony and symbolism to is used prove that death is inevitable.
Watching people suffer is an astonishing action that people love to see. This happens all throughout the world, with movies, shows, and even in schools. In the film, The Hunger Games, the world is similar in a creepy way. It shows people suffering, while others sit back and enjoy watching people suffer. The Hunger Games is trying to warn people around the world about segregation reoccurring, entertainment of suffering, and the effects of poverty on young people.
The main Characters of the book are Atticus, Scout, and Jem Finch. Throughout the novel To Kill a Mockingbird the author gives the reader insight into how racial, gender, and religious discrimination, impact the community of Maycomb. There are many times when racial discrimination is shown in the novel, like when Calpurnia takes Scout and Jem to her church and Lula tells them many times that she has no business bringin white children to a black church.
To Kill a Mockingbird has many of underlying themes such as racism, courage, respect, femininity, etc. But the theme that fits this book most appropriately is innocence and the harm caused to the innocent by evil and bigotry. Examples of this include Jem, Dill, Tom Robinson, Boo Radley. While all these characters have completely different personalities and circumstances they all have one thing in common. All of them were innocent at one point and were harmed by the evil of
Gates, and Mrs. Merriweather. Hypocrisy is a major theme in To Kill a Mockingbird and Harper Lee leaves an underlying message to explain what the times were like. Aunt Alexandra was hypocritical because her statements about Cousin Joshua and the Cunninghams. Miss Gates was also hypocritical because of her statements about Hitler and the black people in Maycomb. Lastly, Mrs. Merriweather is a voice of hypocrisy because of her opinion about blacks in Maycomb and blacks in Africa.
The Hunger Games trilogy revolves around universal dystopian themes such as :oppression, rebellion, class tension as well as appearance vs. reality ," Collins creates the world that on one hand seems quite improbable and extreme, but on the other, vividly reflects some specific issues in a real world, like social inequalities, ignorance and passivity of the people" (Macanić 7). Oppression is perhaps the most common and prevalent dystopian theme as it serves as a warning against a highly probable dark future through shedding light on the dark side of contemporary trends such as advanced technology and reality TV-shows .The Capitol 's oppression operates on two levels; districts and individuals. The districts in general and districts 11 and 12 in particular have suffered great injustices at the ruthless hands of the Capitol ; however, there is no greater injustice than The Hunger Games themselves not only are the people of Panem forced to surrender their children as tributes for the Capitol 's citizens viewing pleasure for a crime they had no hand in committing ,but they are also forced to watch helplessly as their children are killed in the most brutal of manners .In Catching Fire (2009) , President Snow decrees that " the male and female tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of victors" in order to get rid of Katniss once and for all ,and to further assert the Capitol 's dominance and quell any thoughts of rebellion(172).
That’s how Americans get their entertainment. In addition to the previous statement, hunger and starvation is another symbol that describes the abuse of power is hunger and starvation. Hunger and starvation play a huge part in the storyline because the capitol has most of the food but in some districts food is very sparse such as District Twelve which is where Katniss resides. The reason that Katniss is participating in the Hunger Games and the reason why it’s called the Hunger Games is because whoever wins the games will be rewarded with extravagant gifts and mostly food so to speak. Furthermore, there is a lot of violence and war which makes this book gruesome and fun to read.

Gabriel Marquez uses this technique to portray his views on; the role of women, the honour killing actions taken by the Vicario twins, the society in Latin America, the role of Santiago 's mother and the role of the Church. Irony is used to demonstrates the views presented by Gabriel Marquez on the role of women.
