Irony Analysis Writing “I may look fine but in my mind, I’ve killed you three times.” This quote was written by an anonymous source, it’s saying that what’s on the outside is not what is on the inside. This was an example of verbal irony. Irony brings a sense of suspense or tension to the story which makes the reader invested. This quote is excellent when talking about the short story “The Cask of Amontillado” written by Edgar Allen Poe because in the story you learn about the hatred that Montresor has for Fortunato. Poe was a great writer with many talents, one of which was writing with irony; he used this to enhance the already grim and mysterious stories. Understanding the various types of irony that Edgar Allen Poe uses in his writing will help you have a better understanding of his literature. Poe uses this many times throughout “The Cask of Amontillado” like when Montersor is concerned for Fortunato’s health and absence from the carnival when Luchesi could have helped. This was the dramatic irony because Montersor didn’t care for Fortunato's health or that he was gone from the carnival. Montresor was going to kill Fortunato as well, making his absence permanent from the carnival and he was going to die soon.
