The book 1984 was written by George Orwell in the 1940’s. The reason the book was created was to show how and what life was like during the reign of a totalitarian government. 1984 was also created to describe the differences between life in the book compared to life now. Winston Smith is a thirty nine year old man who grew up in London. He has many health problems which include a bad back, and a varicose ulcer. Growing up, life was extremely difficult for Winston. His father was out of the picture, and his mother did exactly what parents were not supposed to do for their children, show generosity. A totalitarian government is defined as a centralized government that has a ruler with total control over everyone. A totalitarian government is a type of government that tries to have complete control over the lives of every human being. It also gives complete control to the leader of the government. In 1984, everyone had to follow the rules of the party. One rule that the party has is that if someone of the party says something is true, it can be true, even if it is technically false. For example, the party believes that two plus two can equal five. If someone disagrees or goes against the rules of the party, they get vaporized, which means erased from history. Once I read the first few chapters, my thoughts got worse. I thought that the book was boring because there was no point and all that it told us was the background of Winston and a description of where he worked. Once I hit part two of the book, things got extremely interesting. Winston started to like Julia, and they were now at the point where they were trying to find places to hide out. My book rating at this time was probably an eight out of ten. Once I got to the end of the book my thoughts changed even more. This book was now starting to be one of my favorite books that I have ever read. Everything was great until I reached the last sentence of the book. To be honest, the last sentence kind of ruined my thoughts on the book, but overall it was still a great
