Essay 1 In 1939, Albert Einstein wrote a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt. Einstein said that Nazis were trying to use the power of the atom to make "extremely powerful bombs. Roosevelt because of this, gathered a group of scientists to study the technology. In 1941, the group of scientists met with British scientists who were also working on the same bomb Einstein had described. We decided to use the bomb because Iwo Jima and Okinawa showed that Japan would fight on even in the face of defeat. We used the bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We used the bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki because we didn’t have a choice.
