Is Atlantis a lost city or a lost cause? Many people have different opinions on Atlantis. Is it real or is it fake? That is the question that has been on the minds of people for years. Atlantis is one of the oldest mysteries in the world. It is a mythical island that Aristocles, also known as Plato, first mentioned in his two dialogues. Ever since, it has interested people for more than 2,000 years and has also influenced many films, articles, and books. The researcher will inform the reader about what Atlantis is, the two dialogues that it originated in, the locations Atlantis might be, how Atlantis affected the world in several ways, and the ideas on why Plato expanded the story of Atlantis. Timaeus and Critias, the two dialogues, were where the concept of Atlantis was first referred to and helped guide it to its fame. These two writings, written in about 360 BCE, are the only current written records that specifically mention Atlantis. They tell a story about “the conflict between the ancient Athenians and the Atlantians 9000 years before Plato's time” (nodak.edu). In the story, they described Atlantis as a strong empire that had overpowered Egypt, but after the early Athenians conquered it and then it was eventually demolished by a disaster. However, these dialogues have interested people to look where they think the location of Atlantis could be and find a trace of it. People have advanced the entire globe, driven expeditions to search the ocean ground, crossed rainforests, and climbed mountain ranges to search for Atlantis. In the Age of Exploration, some people “searched for Atlanteans in the Middle East, Tibet, or even Antarctica” (Bileta).
