Is Evolution a good explanation for psychological concepts? My assigned perspective regarding Evolution being a good explanation for psychological concepts is no. After reading our assigned chapter over this topic I had to refresh my memory on the theory of evolution, and natural selection. Of course, I am familiar these but wanted ensure I could completely comprehend the purpose and framework behind Evolutionary Psychology (EP). Now, the theory of evolution presumes the development of life from non-life and stresses a purely naturalistic "descent with modification" where creatures evolve from more simplistic ancestors naturally over time; and as random genetic mutations occur within an organism's genetic code the beneficial mutations are preserved because they aid survival which leads to a process known as "natural selection” (Bridgford, 2009). Natural selection is the differential survival and reproduction of individuals due to differences in phenotype, and is a key mechanism of evolution, the change in heritable traits, and population over time (Wikipedia, 2017). Additionally, psychological concepts are what address and explain the behaviors …show more content…
EP’s framework foundation is built on assumptions about the brain and its evolution without substantial neurological evidence for any of these assertions, and are basically advanced hypotheses about mental function and fixed patterns of behavior or cognitive activity, rather than defined areas of the brain (Hamilton, 2008). Also, the three biases that were mentioned by Gantt and Slife (2016) which are objectivism, materialism, and instrumentalism that EP theorists or psychologist’s refuse to recognize, along with reductionism and
