Nicolas Carr, an acclaimed writer in both business and technology, argues in “"Is Google Making Us Stupid?” published in 2008, that the internet is altering the way humans focus. In his article, Carr states “Now my concentration often starts to drift after two or three pages” (Carr). Using first person personal experience this permits readers to presuppose that everyone is justly and effortlessly exposed to the impacts of the internet. Additionally accrediting himself, a prosperous and educated writer, Carr adds reliability and support towards his argument demonstrating that a literate, knowledgeable man can be susceptible to the effects of the internet. John Bohannon, a biologist and journalist, published "Searching for the Google Effect on People's Memory.” Bohannon’s article depicts the findings of Betsy Sparrow, a psychology professor. The study consisted of 106 undergraduate subjects, and tested whether people were faster at memorizing where the information was, or the information itself. Bohannon quotes: “They were better at remembering where information was stored than the information itself.” The study presented that students who had been told that their information would be demolished were more efficient at remembering the information than the subjects who were told the information would be saved (Sparrow). This study helps prove how the brain’s memory is adapting to modern society. Carr articulates “Over the past few years I’ve had an uncomfortable sense that someone, or something, has been tinkering with my brain, remapping the neural circuitry, reprogramming the memory”(Carr). This is evident through society because people are becoming much more lazy. Apparent through television shows such as, “My 600 pound life,” or even commercials such as the man asking the lady on the kindle how to set a timer to get his niece off, is showing how reliant people have become and how reading a book or a newspaper is almost unheard of. The internet is also morally corrupting the behavior of many people. With access to anything on the web kids are viewing things that are not appropriate for their age. Cyber bullying has also hit an all time high as people can express themselves over the internet in such an easy way. Humans operate much more differently than they did back in the day. People have become very lackadaisical and just look to the internet for answers. However, the internet can be very misleading.
