Some people may believe that the internet is changing the world in a bad way. In the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” the author, Nicholas Carr, talks about how he believes that the internet could be taking over the world. Carr believes that the world relies on the internet entirely too much. To some people, his argument could seem valid because almost everyone in today’s technological driven world look towards the internet and search engines like Google to answer their questions rather than trying to figure it out themselves and learning from their journey to find the answer. Nicholas Carr begins his article with a scene from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey to begin his argument that the way we think is changing. This change is affecting our attention spans, ability to read and comprehend, as well as the time we spend thinking. Carr explains that the way people think has now changed because everything we need is now in the palm of our hands in an instant. Work that used to require major thought and energy are now replaced by fast search engines that require only seconds or minutes to provide access too the information we are seeking. This immediate access has many benefits, Carr admits himself, but warns that this is access is changing the way we now think too. We tend to find ourselves thinking more like the web where everything is fast and convenient. A study by the University College London shows that we are now in the day and age that is showing a change in the way we not only think, but the way we read thanks to the text of the Internet.
