With the advent of the internet, the need for printed works has lessened as people spend more and more of their time-consuming information online. This has led to both a faster, more efficient use of information as well as made it so people do not need an ample attention span in order to complete their task of acquiring information. The internet has changed the way people think. It is arguable that internet usage has unintentionally shortened it’s users' attention spans and caused people to skim through pages of information as opposed to actually devoting time to reading through them thoroughly. Due to the fact that information has become so easily accessible, "deep reading that used to come naturally has become a struggle" for many people as Nicholas Carr points out in Is Google Making Us Stupid?. People are less likely to remember articles that they read online (especially if they read it straight off of their screens and opt not to print them out.) It is easier to remember something that was printed as having to flip through the pages creates a mental mapping of the information contained in the pages. The "line-by-line journey" that the brain takes a reader through allows for the retention of information as well as makes it easier to recall certain parts of the text as stated in, You Won't Remember This Article, Or Anything You Read Online, Unless You Print It Out. People who read directly off of their phone or computer screens are not creating the "topographic maps" their brain needs in order to properly remember the information they are taking in.
