A resilient person possesses characteristics such as awareness, and self-control, and Hamlet demonstrate this better than Oedipus, so Hamlet is more resilient. A resilient person is aware of their surroundings and take actions based on the situations around them. First of all, Hamlet demonstrates his awareness of people around him while Oedipus knows nothing about himself or others around him. Hamlet shows he has awareness of people when he learns that his friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were sent to spy on him. He suspected that his two friends were not loyal to him so he said: Do you think I am easier to be played on than a pipe? Call me what instrument you will, though you canfret me, you cannot play upon me.” (Shakespeare.3.2.393-396). …show more content…
He asked one of them to play a pipe, but he said he did not know how. Then, Hamlet confronted them that he cannot be played just like a pipe, to show that he did not trust them. In this particular scene, Hamlet shows that he is aware of people around him. In contrast to Hamlet, Oedipus’s lack of awareness is what makes him less resilient. Oedipus only found out he was adopted when the messenger told him saying that He was not Polybus’s son, but rather a gift given to him (Sophocles, 95-100). Oedipus only finds out that he was adopted when his adoptive father died. However, his happiness for his death did not last long as Polybus was not his real father. Meaning that the prophecy could still happen. Oedipus thought he ran away from the prophecy, but he found himself dwelling in it. For this reason, Hamlet is more resilient because he is more aware of his surroundings and himself. In addition, Hamlet is more reslient because he shows he has knowledge of actions taken by others, while Oedipus is not. He shows he has self-control by doing so. On the other hand, Oedipus do not have self-control as he blinded himself, “If I could see, I don’t know how my eyes could look at my own father when I come to Hades or at my wretched mother. Against those two I have committed acts so vile that even if I hanged myself that would not be sufficient punishment” (Sophocles, 1370). Oedipus deeply felt the guilt of his actions and the only way he punished himself was none other than to blind himself. His guilt makes him lose control and now he is no longer seeing. For this reason, Hamlet is more resilient since he has self-control unlike
