When someone wrongs us, we make a choice to take revenge or move forward. When we choose revenge, we are also choosing to accept dire consequences that are unprecedented, and will affect who we are. For these reasons, revenge is not a wise choice and it is always better to move forward then take revenge. This is especially proven through William Shakespeare's Hamlet, and the consequences Hamlet faces in choosing revenge. The consequences he faces are a descent into madness, violence, and loss of those he loves. Hamlet will demonstrate for us why revenge is never a choice we should make. But more often than not, one's course for revenge can take violent turns. Hamlet's choice for revenge causes the deaths of his mother, Claudius, Laertes, Ophelia and Polonius. However, Hamlet takes specific delight in the death of Claudius when he states, "Here, thou incestuous, murderous, damnèd Dane, / Drink off this potion. Is thy union here? / Follow my mother." (5.2.3982-3984) Hamlet's choice of revenge allows him to enjoy his step-father's death and causes the death of many others. Murder and violence has very severe consequences in today's society, and achieving your revenge through the death of others will never give us the absolution we think we will feel from their deaths. It will weigh on you for the rest of your life, along with the other consequences of your revenge. Finally, we all lose those we love at some point in our lives. For we all will one day pass into whatever lies after life, depending on what you believe. However, when on the course for revenge it is certain that those around us will be affected by our actions. In Hamlet, this is especially demonstrated through the character of Ophelia. Because of the death of her father and Hamlet's behavior towards her, Ophelia commits suicide.
