One way to determine whether human nature is innately good or bad is to look at the moral development of children. It is long known that when it comes to the teachings of Confucius, learning begins at home. Cultivation and nurturing of ones’ values should be taught by one’s parents and elders, as young children are expected to demonstrate high levels of respect towards their family members. When children are left alone to develop their own sense of morality, they may be easily led astray by negative influences around them. Just like the willow that has the tendency towards goodness, a child may still have the potential to develop a poor sense of morality if he does not recognize and cultivate the 4 sprouts.
