In Is Love ColorBlind, Sailer attempts to explain what he calls the bitterness of interracial marriage by Asian men and black women. For decades interracial marriage has been banned and frowned upon. In 1967, the Supreme Court banned the anti-interracial marriage laws in many states, but 72 of white Southern and 42 percent of Northern whites were against interracial marriage. However, as the world progresses, more people are in interracial relationships. According the to the Census, from 1960 to 1990, white-Asian married couples have drastically increased, specifically white men and Asian women. Of interracial marriages, majority are either black men and white wife couples, and white man and Asian women couples. Few whites understand the disparities of intermarriages because even though white women have found competition from Asian women, they have found an increase access to black men. Sailer calls this a balanced dating world for whites. Continuing, Sailer reflects on other facts about intermarriage. General thoughts would suggest since black women are around whites more at universities and general public, because there are more of them, they would find an easier time marrying white men. However, they have trouble finding satisfaction because advice is given that they should find love in masculine young black men. Other ideas may suggest Asian men and black women would marry each other if there are so many unmarried. Sailer points out it is rare to find such a couple. Additional findings suggest black men prefer light skinned, long-haired black women, while black women do not prefer lighter men. The white man, Asian women pairing has been shown in art for a long time, by musicals like “Madame Butterfly” and “Miss Saigon.” For many years as well, black men were encouraged to be kept apart because of Jim Crow.
