What is a hero? According to Google, a hero is “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” (Google.com). Many will agree Miep Gies fits this description; an article written about her gives her the title “Hero of the Holocaust” (Legacy.com). She’s a hero because she protected some of the people targeted by the Nazis, preserved the diary of a girl known all over the world, and continued to spread hope and encouragement for the rest of her life. In 1942, when her boss, Otto Frank, asked her to help hide their family from the Nazis, she didn’t hesitate. With the help of a few others, Miep selflessly supported eight Jews in hiding. While the Frank family, Van Pels and Fritz Pfeffer hid in Otto’s office annex, Miep brought them food, newspapers, books and other things to ensure their survival and bring them comfort. She spent most of her time travelling all over to speak to people about tolerance. She believed that speaking out and being uncomfortable is better than being comfortable but keeping silent. To add to her admirable acts, she always humbly rejected praise from others.
