Is New Belgium Brewery's Ability To Achieve Social Responsibility?

As a group we believe that New Belgium Brewery (NBB) is a socially responsible corporation. Social responsibility is an ethical framework where corporations should embrace economical, cultural, social, and environmental issues ethically and susceptibly (imasocialentrepreneur.com, 2015).
Firstly, as a corporation, NBB believes that the synchronization of what a “brand says,” and what a “company does” is the stepping-stone in achieving social responsibility (Ferrell, Fraedrich & Ferrell, pp.436). This mandate helps New Belgium Brewery emphasize that as a company, being able to integrate the company’s code of conducts and core values is what will make the company successful. Some of these core values include “promoting beer culture and the responsible enjoyment of beer,” “environmental stewardship: minimizing resource consumption, maximizing energy efficiency, and recycling,” as well as “trusting each other and committing ourselves to authentic relationships, communications, and promises” (Ferrell, Fraedrich & Ferrell, pp.436). NBB gave back to communities through event sponsorships, corporate giving, and philanthropic involvement (Ferrell, Fraedrich & Ferrell, pp.440). Not to mention, NBB donates $1 for every barrel of beer that they produced to non-profit organizations, employees are paid for their community service work, and they give about 9% of their profits to charity (bcorporation.net, 2015). David Edger, former director of the Institute for Brewing Studies, states, “…members of society do not believe a company whose major products is alcohol can be socially responsible, New Belgium set out to prove that for those who make choice to drink responsibly…will do everything possible to contribute to society” (Ferrell, Fraedrich & Ferrell, pp. 441).
