The main character in the Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford, endured numerous troublesome trials. The last trial he endured, in my opinion, was the hardest; giving him the chance to attack and kill Zaroff right then and there, instead choosing not to take advantage of the situation. Ultimately, he confronted and challenged him to a fair and even sword fight, the winner getting to keep Zaroff 's home while the loser was fed to the dogs. This act shows a great deal of Rainsford 's character and personality, proving to be a man of honor and fairness, with respect in this scenario. Rainsford allowed an even fight to take place, and as a result, for his actions, he won while Zaroff received what he truly deserved.
In the short story The Most Dangerous Game, the author Richard Connell shows that Rainsford needs control of his emotions, patience , and expert hunting and decision making skills in order to defeat Zaroff. Rainsford needs to gain control of his emotions to outthink Zaroff, who symbolizes Rainsfords "steep hill". When he finds that he is going to be hunted his natural instinct is to run and panic, but then he stops to look around and get a grip on the task at hand. Then at a critical moment when Zaroff finds him in a tree, Rainsford panics again because he realizes Zaroff is on his trail and is toying with him. Once again, he gains control of his emotions and formulates a plan.
In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Rainsford fits the category of Zaroff’s ideal animal to hunt, because Rainsford displays the attribute to reason by being able to make many life saving decisions throughout the story. Rainsford has the ability to reason from the very beginning of the story, because he was able to remain calm to make a life saving decision in an unnerving situation, which proves that he fits the quarry for Zaroff to hunt. As he was in the water, he recalls the gunshots he heard while he was still on the yacht, “they had come from the right, and doggedly he swam in that direction, swimming with slow, deliberate strokes, conserving his strength” (Connell 14). Whereas most people would have panicked in the situation
The most dangerous game was written by Richard Connell in 1924. It is a short story which has mystery, suspense and adventure. Also, it shows how people do their best to survive in different situations. This story consists of two main characters, Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff. The story begins on a yacht in the Caribbean Sea.
Now in “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford has to find a way to outsmart the hunter “ The softness of the earth had given him an idea. He stepped back from the quicksand a dozen feet or so and, like some huge prehistoric beaver, he began to dig”(Connell 21). This is how Rainsford thought he could outsmart the hunter. Rainsford wanted to trick the hunter because if not the hunter would kill Rainsford because the hunter does not like to hunt normal things but humans. If Rainsford survives three days he could leave which is why he has to outsmart the hunter.
If I find him, the general smiled, he loses” (Connell 5). In this section of the story, Zaroff is explaining the rules of the game to Rainsford. When Zaroff says “If I find him….. he loses,” you can highly infer by this that when he says “loses” he means they die, so he’s practically saying that is Rainsford loses, he dies. Typically, when one knows they are going to die, they do what they can to save themselves, which is what Rainsford did.
Rainsford from the story “The Most Dangerous Game” used his skills to survive being hunter by General Zaroff. Throughout these three stories, three survival traits are used to live through harsh conditions. Resourcefulness, determination, and willpower are the traits one must have to be a survivor. Resourcefulness is the survival trait used by Rainsford in “The Most Dangerous Game.” On page 20 of “The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford constructs a Malay man-catcher trap as an attempt to kill General Zaroff.
(He is the one who killed all of those animals). On his island, where he hunts humans, the General has never lost to his own game of ‘survival’. Which means he eventually killed all of the contestants, (captured men who come to the island) or they die on their own. As well as the General , Rainsford too is a great survivor with the same characteristic as General Zaroff.
In another instance, when Rainsford was hiding from General Zaroff, he had to convince himself not to regress to those animal-like instincts that he had developed. The text says “Rainsford’s impulse was to hurl himself down like a panther, but he saw the general’s right hand held something metallic—a small automatic pistol.” (231). As you can tell from the text, Rainsford really wanted to jump down from his hiding spot and attack the general, but he couldn’t. If he had done so, he would end up losing the game. Then, near the end of the story, Rainsford is running from the General and his pack and he sees the ocean shore and it’s deep waters below.
“The Most Dangerous Game” Essay In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell A man named Rainsford hears a gunshot and falls off a boat on to which he was traveling upon. Rainsford swims to this island to which he heard the gunshots, once on land he walks around and finds an unusual sight A mansion. When inside the mansion he comes across a man Named General Zaroff whos is a fan of his. Zaroff he hunts humans.
Also, General Zaroff is an extreme hunter and doesn’t find pleasure in hunting regular animals. Zaroff says the most dangerous game is humans because they have the ability to reason. Rainsford is going to be hunted and is given a certain amount of time to survive. Moreover, while Rainsford is being hunted Zaroff
Therefore, Rainsford won’t ever hunt again because he is traumatized by his experiences on the island. With all his experiences on the island Rainsford became traumatized. For example when Zaroff tells Rainsford about the type of hunting he does, which he hunts actual men. “Hunting? Good God, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder” (Connell 23).
Tanner Toussaint In the short story The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff. One of the reasons why Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff is on the island the only way to live is to hunt or to be the one being hunted. Secondly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because Zaroff wanted to die. Lastly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because killing Zaroff is going to be the only way Rainsford will escape the island from a psychopath.
General Zaroff is different, to say the least, in Richard Connell’s book, “The Most Dangerous Game.” Rainsford is stranded on a deserted island, or so he thinks. Rainsford comes upon a mansion that is owned by General Zaroff. He knows of Rainsford, who is a renowned author of a book about the hunt, as well as everything and everywhere Rainsford has hunted. General Zaroff is also a hunter, but he goes to the extreme.
Most people when they hear “The Most Dangerous Game” they think of bull riding or other dangerous games that don’t involve death. “The Most Dangerous Game” is a suspenseful cliff hanging story that follows the days of a castaway on the island of a crazed hunter. Rainsford is a big game hunter who falls off a boat near the island of General Zaroff, a big Cossack general who is looking for an alternative to hunting dangerous animals but with a twist. Throughout “The Dangerous Game” Rainsford and General Zaroff both show examples of IRony and exert arrogance.
