Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the US, who led the country through a civil war with his intelligence, strong principles, and empathy once said, “Whatever you are, be a good one.” In every aspect of one’s life, one should strive to have a good heart and be a good person. So, to be a good leader, one must first be a good person. Good leaders put the needs of others before their own wants and needs. They see the value in others and recognize the contributions of others. Good leaders skillfully manage tense topics and situations. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph is the best leader because he is selfless, appreciative of others, and diplomatic.

The first good leadership quality Ralph possesses is selflessness, he prioritizes everyone’s safety and comfort over his own desires. Jack returns to the beach from hunting to see Ralph working on the shelters with only help from Simon. While arguing with Jack, Ralph shouts, ‘“But you like it!”...“While I-”’ (54). Ralph would love to do anything else. He’s envious of Jack, who enjoys what he does. He’s envious of everyone who just left their responsibilities to go play or hunt. But, Ralph doesn’t shrug off his responsibilities, he realizes that building the shelters is important to protecting the group against the elements and fear of the beastie. While Ralph is complaining to Jack about how people don’t help much he makes sure to mention that ‘“Simon, he helps”…“He’s done just as much as I have.”’ (54). Ralph’s able to appreciate Simon for the help he provides, even when later stating Simon is funny and weird. Simon is an outsider, and Ralph is angry with everyone, but still gives credit to Simon and recognizes the help Simon gave
