This essay discusses digital literacy. It analyses two discussions. The discussions are Myth of Digital Literacy and Is the Internet Making us Stupid. Both discussions indicate how the internet has affected the society. The article reviews various quotes in the discussion. It illustrates how each quote serves to argue the case and clarify the points made.
Is the Internet making Us Stupid
This is an article by Carr. It tries to validate the concept that the internet reduces the attention spasm of readers. I will analyze with quotes how his language succeeds in arguing his case. Carr feels that this scene reflects the present state of the people’s mind. There is the image of disconnecting the memory circuits” (Carr 1) of HAL. Here he employs the use of fiction. This occurs since the astronaut Dave Bowman is nearly sent to his death by Hal. It evokes a feeling of pity in the reader. It also foreshadows what might happen in the future. This scene indicates how Carr projects the internet and Google to be the cause for the brain to function less cohesively and differently. This is in the face of digital advancements where electronic gaming, texting and auditory distractions supersede verbal communication. It brings into question whether the connectivity gap is irresolvable. A simple tutorial gap accompanied by some practice moves a mere amateur greatly alters the learning curve by catapulting the individual into the social media whirlwind. Thus, great shifts in interpersonal communication. However, some critics argue that digital media is a setback that leads to massive decrease in cognitive development. Claims exist that ignorance construes when information undergoes oversaturation such that the desire for knowledge and facts is not present. Paikin states that “The US National Endowment of Arts Survey of Adult Literacy showed the first increase in literacy in over twenty years with the largest increases among youngest of adults” this indicates that the shift in verbal paradigm is beginning to shorten the gap between generation and enabling literacy advancements for both groups.
The internet forms a gateway for information to undergo dissemination. Digital media revolution has led to the broadening of literal horizons. Thus, literal rates of adults of all ages are beginning to embrace technological advances. This had seen academic advances.
