The Personification of September Neil Gaiman effectively personifies September in his short story “October in the Chair” through his physical description, personality, and the story that they tell the others. Firstly, September is effectively personified in the method in which his appearance is described. Since school normally begins in September, September is notoriously associated with learning and education. September is depicted as a wise old man embodying stereotypical physical attributes often seen in older teachers and professors. September is described as “ He had a pencil-thin mustache and was balding in the front, which made his forehead seem high and wise” (Gaiman). As well, when September's forehead is described as wise the reader is once again associating this individual with school and as a result, the month of September. Secondly, September is effectively personified in the method in which his personality is described. September is portrayed as a snooty, high and mighty individual who thinks he is better than the others because of his knowledge of high-level things like fine wine and history. When September is arguing with August about the quality of his story, he accuses August that maybe he just isn’t capable of understanding such a complex story. September argues “Obviously pathos and culture are not to everyone's taste. Some people prefer their barbecues and beer” (Gaiman). September is often thought of as the beginning of fall and education. Many people prefer fall and enjoy the changing temperatures, leading them to believe that September is the best month. This is expressed in September's arrogant personality. As well, September's belief that pathos and culture are better than beer and barbecues demonstrates the relationship between the start of school and September.
