The Red Scare in the 1920`s
Communism is wrong and very bad and should not exist at all and never should have been created. When someone mentions communism most people think of Russia, Karl Marx, or maybe even the Vietnam War. The Red Scare was also referred to as the time when people were afraid of communism and communists were in the USA. The Red Scare did not only happen in the 1960s but also in the 1920s.
No one can deny that the Red Scare and communism have affected America in multiple negative ways. The First Red Scare in the 1920s occurred in the USA soon after Russia's Bolshevik revolution in 1917. This revolution brought communism to peoples minds to be a very real threat. These bombs were made mainly for major people with huge roles in politics. One of the major people targeted was attorney General A Mitchell Palmer.(Sacco & Vanzetti: The Red Scare of 1919–1920 1) Palmer was not pleased with this his Response to this threat with the Palmer Raids, which were multiple arrests and deportations of major leftist figures in the usa. The Second Event was Palmer appointed J. Edgar Hoover in charge of the New branch. This new branch was called the bureau of investigation which was specifically meant to investigate and check out radical groups.(The Red Scare 2) Even though socialism was a major force to reckon with in american politics, its many similarities with communism caused many to fear socialist activities after 1917. In the year 1919 a small group of radicals created and formed the communist labor party. Following this were a series of strikes that occurred. One such strike being boston police went on strike and also steel and coal miners also went on strike. WW1 caused people to embrace strong nationalistic and anti immigrant sympathies. How this happened mainly was WW1. After WW1 ended it cause many problems in the USA. One of the biggest threats was that production needs were failing and unemployment was rising witch caused people to go on labor strikes. In January of 1920 federal agents broke into homes of suspects of anarchist beliefs without search warrants, jailed labor leaders, and held close to 5000 citizens with no respect at all for their right to legal counsel. Palmers view’s stated that he felt that the american civil liberties were not as important as thinking out of potential wrongdoers, eventually most were released but some of them were deported.
