It’s a familiar scenario. You get home from a day at the beach and notice that your skin has turned bright red. “Oh well” you think to yourself, “It’s not that bad”. However, when the sun sets, you realise that the ‘tiny’ bit of sunburn has transformed into an intense glowing red, morphing you into a giant lobster. Unbeknownst to you, severe sunburns count for 95-99% of all melanomas (the most aggressive and intrusive type of skin cancer) diagnosed in Australia. Ever since Sid Seagull preached the words “Slip, Slop, Slap” to the people of Australia in 1981, the effects of the sun's piercing UV rays have been well known of. However thirty-six years later, we’re still getting roasted by the sun. There's no doubt about it, all Australians should be more sun safe because skin cancer diagnoses are through the roof, Australia's UV index is one of the highest on Earth and Australians naturally tend to spend their time outdoors.
