In the novel Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, written by Mary Shelley, the creature that was created by Victor Frankenstein, possessed certain qualities that made him indifferent to the human race. These qualities, however, made the creature more friendly, than a fiend.
From the moment the creature was in the world, he possessed a mind like that of a child, ready to absorb any knowledge that was accessible to him. He had found himself spying on a diverse family who lived deep in the woods, away from society. The creature grew fond of the family because they were different from the “barbarous villagers” he had encountered the night before. He explained to Frankenstein that, “...the greater became [his] desire to claim their protection and kindness; [his] heart yearned to be known and loved...to see their sweet looks directed towards him with affection...”(Shelley 56). The goal that the creature shared with Frankenstein was unattainable, and they both knew this. The creature only wants others to understand his pain and suffering, he wants to be loved by others and feel appreciated. Frankenstein, the creator, wanted nothing to do with the creature and ultimately left him to starve and die on his own. The pain that the creature felt, once the family deserted their home, was overwhelming. The creature was no longer interested in befriending humans and “For the first time the feelings of revenge and hatred filled [his] bosom...”(Shelley 59). Filled with revenge and hatred, he sought to seek out his creator, Victor Frankenstein. The creature no longer wanted others to accept him because he understood that his appearance will scare any human he dare come in contact with. His deformities left him to be isolated and the overwhelming emotion of being alone. The creature compared himself to Adam because of these reasons, and he too was created from natural resources. Yet, the creature claimed that he felt more like Satan because he, “...viewed the bliss of [his] protectors, the bitter gall of envy rose within [him].”(Shelley 55). The creature was envious of everyone around him and he, like the fallen angel, wanted nothing more than to be superior to his creator and destroy him. However, even the fallen angel was worshipped and had companions that followed him everywhere he went; whereas, the creature is cursed to be forever alone on Earth.
