Problems With Summer Vacation Is a three month summer vacation causing students to lose the knowledge they retained throughout the school year? The huffington post states that the typical student loses two months of knowledge in math over the summer. So why are we still having a three month break in the summer if we know it is harming students ability to learn? To find why we still do this even though studies show that students lose knowledge during summer vacation we need to look at why it started, the benefits of summer vacation, and the negatives of it. According to Rebecca Klein of the Huffington Post “ 66 percent teachers have to spend three to four weeks re-teaching students course material at the beginning of the year, while 24 percent of teachers spend at least five to six weeks re-teaching material from the previous school year.” This means that every year teachers could teach three to six more weeks of new information if that time wasn’t spent re-teaching old material.
